Residing at the edge of Savannah’s Historic District, The Thunderbird Inn is a Southern-retro inn with a kitsch colour palate & personality to boot. Living up to its reputation as the “hippest hotel in Savannah” guests are presented with popcorn on arrival – a Godsend when travelling with children – & there’s free Krispy Kreme donuts & coffee for breakfast (see previous comment).
The hotel rooms themselves, however, are nothing to write home about. The one we stayed in was cramped & in need of a spruce, but it was clean & the air conditioner worked (a must given the summer heat).
Twin beds with complimentary Moon Pie’s & cans of cola.
A little storage space, sink & coffee machine.
Shower over bath with Thunderbird Inn toiletries.
Across the road there’s a Greyhound bus station & a “dot” Express Shuttle stop where you can board Savannah’s downtown fare-free transportation service, meaning you can leave your car in the car park & see the sights without having to drive!
I won’t lie, I was lured in by The Thunderbird Inn’s retro theme, clever marketing & price point. It delivered on all those things & the location is pretty spot on to0. If you’re wondering where to stay in Savannah & you’re on a budget, this is the place to stay.
